This year is the 750th anniversary of the death of St Thomas Aquinas, the great doctor of the Church. St Dominic's is celebrating the year-long jubilee with a number of events and initiatives to which all are welcome.
Plenary Indulgence
The gift of a Plenary Indulgence is available to the faithful who make a pilgrimage this year to a holy place connected with the Order of Friars Preachers and there either:
- devoutly take part in the jubilee ceremonies, or
- devote a suitable time to pious recollection, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and invocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Thomas Aquinas.
Please consider making a special visit to the image of St Thomas Aquinas in St Joseph’s Chapel. A prayer card has been placed to assist you.
Solemn Vespers and Benediction (7:15pm, Sunday 28 January)
Parishioners and visitors are warmly invited to join the Dominican friars for Solemn Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in honour of St Thomas Aquinas.
Melbourne Thomistic Institute
In commemoration of the 750th anniversary of the death of St Thomas, the Dominicans in Camberwell are establishing the Melbourne Thomistic Institute. Its first activity will be a series of four-week modules to give their students and anyone else who is interested a thorough introduction to the thought of the Angelic Doctor. The series will work through the whole of the Summa Theologiae, just touching some parts and giving a closer look at others, and will prepare for this by looking at his philosophical thinking and his scripture commentaries.
All of this will be done in convenient modules of four consecutive Thursdays, with two hours of class on each of the evenings: enough time, we hope, to get a good grasp of a single topic, but short enough for busy people with lots of commitments. The texts to be studied will be distributed in advance of each class, so that students can prepare by looking at them.
Module 1: “The Teacher of Catholic Truth”:
An Introduction to the Theology of Thomas Aquinas
Thursday 29 February 2024 - Thursday 21 March 2024
Based upon the very first question in the Summa, this module looks at what Thomas thinks theology is, how it should be taught, and the structure and method of the Summa, as well as giving an overview of the life and works of Thomas.
